Sustainability, complexity and knowledge (modus operandi)

Sustainability, complexity and knowledge (modus operandi)

This article begins by tracing how the idea of sustainable development has evolved — from concrete, physical notions to more abstract and intangible ones. The author proposes using the term sustainability instead, as it better reflects the most current perspectives. The discussion places sustainability within a context of complexity and uncertainty, and suggests viewing it through a systemic lens.

To make this concept practical, three key pillars are proposed:

  1. A systemic view of the world — and, by extension, of organizations and territories.

  2. A new way of understanding knowledge and its role.

  3. The use of system dynamics as a tool to help formalize and build sustainability.

Ultimately, the article serves as an invitation to adopt systemic and sustainable approaches in both organizations and communities.
